Ace Cannon

The Hope Watermelon Festival will once again welcome one of the best-known saxophonists in music when Ace Cannon takes to the stage Friday August 12th.  Cannon is best known for his 1962 hit "Tuff" as well as an instrumental version of "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" which was nominated for a Grammy in the 1970's.  The saxist was a pioneer on the Memphis music scene working sessions for Sun Records and appearing on early records by the Bill Black Combo.  In recent years, Cannon has settled in Greenville, Mississippi and continues to play numerous engagements throughout the South.

Four young men walked into the Chamber of Commerce wishing to perform at this year's festival. After learning of the young men's talents, Chamber director Mark Keith scheduled them for 6 to 8pm Thursday August 11th on the First National Bank stage.  Mark, not being an aficionado of rock music, is not quite sure what to compare them to.  But he encourages all the friends of these young men to come out and hear their festival debut.

The Hope Watermelon Festival dates back to 1926 and has been held continuously since 1977.  The four-day event is billed an inexpensive event for families.  There is no admission to the festival and only a $2 parking fee for those who park on the grounds.  Fair Park is located on Park Drive just off Arkansas 174, approximately six blocks south of US 67.  For information on the festival, contact the Hope/Hempstead County Chamber of Commerce at 870-777-3640.
